MS strongarming their own customers

No surpise I suppose. A Microsoft representative contacts a businessman about his companies compliance with MS licensing. Only problem is that the person they contacted has kept records of all of his Microsoft purchases and doesn't take kindly to having his time wasted on these sorts of annoyances.

Especially when it turns out the MS rep wasn't from the anti-piracy division, but the sales division..

Another step towards a cancer cure?

Researchers have managed to inject cancer resistant cells from one mouse into a mouse with cancer and kill all of the cancer cells.

Now, they said white blood cells from that mouse's descendants were injected into ordinary mice with cancer and their disease was completely wiped out.

Blogger Sux?

A couple of weeks ago I tried to update this page with some postings about the approaching cyclone, which failed miserably. This site simply continued to refresh the "posting" page until I got fed up and hit stop.

Logging in a few days later I noticed that it had posted three copies of the post, but not one of them appeared on the main page.. hmm..

Then to top it all off I got an email from these guys a few days ago getting me to click on a link to prove that this page isn't spam! (A promise that they'd contact me "in a few days" to confirm that my page is legit).

Obviously they haven't read the number of comments I'm averaging per post - 0. Worst. Spam. Ever.

SMIL, Firefox, JS

Implementing SMIL using JS and Firefox SVG.

Java Sux

I'm beginning to really dislike Java.

I have an Applet that runs in a frame. When selecting a button on one frame another window appears with the applet running in it again.

The applet is simply reading data from a socket. It is signed so that it is allowed to have access to the network.

But on one PC, it fails to connect when the window pops up. If I look at the main page with the applet running all is well. Only in the pop up window does it fail.

Adding to $HOME/.java.policy the following,

grant {; };

fixes the problem.

But why does it occur at all!?! And only on 1 machine!?!

Grrrr.. Java Sucks.

No Porn For You!

Labor is trying to keep themselves out of office for another term..

Opposition Leader Kim Beazley said a Labor government would force internet service providers (ISPs) to block violent and pornographic material before it reached home computers.

Obviously the Opposition Leader hasn't heard of Proxy servers.

The head of the Internet Industry Association in Australia seems to have his head screwed on the correct way,

Mr Coroneos said the problem lay in educating parents and teachers about the use of filter systems.

Maybe he should run for Opposition Leader. The ALP certainly needs to have a couple of bright sparks working for them.

Of course, the ALP isn't the first to put forward this idiotic proposal. The Government tried the same thing a few years back and the Opposition said,

Labor believes the Report's recommendation to increase internet regulation by forcing all Australian internet service providers (ISPs) to filter all of their content is unworkable. The cost this would place on ISPs would be prohibitive, and internet speeds would be significantly reduced

Beazley doing a backflip. Try not to picture it.
